Celebrating our WWII Vets – Stanley Charles Waz

 Stanley Charles Waz, son of Mrs. Anna Waz, of Warsaw St. He was born on June 19, 1919, and was 23 years old at the time of his enlistment in 1942 in the U.S. Army. Lieutenant Stanley Waz, was one of the first “ boys” from Deep River to be called into the armed forces, He graduated from Anti-Aircraft Artillery School at Camp Davis North Carolina. Stanley was sent to Fort Sill for Officer’s Candidate School and received his commission. 

 Lt. Waz married his sweetheart, Josephine Koba just three days before he was sent to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. 

Lieutenant Waz served with a Coastal Artillery unit in Belgium and France. Stanley saw much action as he landed in Normandy on D-Day and was commended for his services. On New Year’s Day, 1945, he was defending a military position when a group of eight German planes swooped down in a raid. Lieut. Waz and his men stuck to their guns and downed five of the eight. For this alone they were commended by General Richards of the Technical Air Command. Lieut. Waz also aided in defending England against the buzz bombs and was successful in bringing many of these death-dealing missiles to the ground. While in Germany on occupational duty after V-E Day he visited many of the German prison camps and can vouch from his own experience of the horrors which he saw. He received an Honorable Discharge on October 26, 1945, with the rank of Capt. He was awarded a Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre for bravery He died July 4, 2005, and is buried at Fountain Hill Cemetery, Deep River, CT
