Deep River Historical Society’s April Update

The Corona virus has disrupted our spring activities but we are trying to keep a positive attitude.  As the current pandemic seems to be evolving daily, it is the thought of the trusties that dates and times may change as we get closer to our scheduled events.

The Annual Meeting and Potluck Supper in March was cancelled. However, the work of the Society continued on! Thank you to Sue and Bob Wisner for providing a way for the membership to vote online the new Officers of the Board of Trustees as well as four new trustees! Congratulations to all and thank you for your commitment to the Society.

Welcome to our new trustees – all have been involved in volunteering for the Society over the past year and their presence on the board will make an impact right away. 

SAVE THE DATE! The Annual Ladies Tea has been postponed to October 17th.  Patty Carver will be presenting the music of George Gershwin. Invitations will be mailed out in late August. 

The Grand Opening of our new exhibits is scheduled for June 6th, Commemorating the Notable Women: Suffragist Movement and the Passage of the 19th Amendment and the long awaited Wharf to Waterfalls exhibit featuring our mills and factories along the Deep River. While work is continuing on these projects. Social distancing and the closing of non essential businesses may cause a delay in opening. Please check out events calendar for updates.

 The Annual Strawberry Social is scheduled for June 14th time TBA. We are hopeful the world will be back to normal by this date. Please check our events calendar for updates.

FAMILY DAY – September 19th is a town wide celebration. The Society will again partner with the DR Merchants to create an Orphan Car Show at this historical society. This was a very popular first time event last year and we are hoping to have even more cars turn out this year. The event will be held from 9am-2:00pm.

Our Tri town Vintage Baseball Game is set for Sept 20th! First pitch will be thrown at 2:00pm. Come out and support you local team!

November 15th the Tri Town Historical Society will be hosting an event at the Deep River Town Hall. The historical societies of Chester, Deep River and Essex are co sponsoring a program showcasing Local Notable Women in History, with as our guest speaker Denise Merrill.  We are collecting photos and information about Deep River’s notable women. Anyone with items to share please contact Rhonda Forristall at 860-526-5086 or any other trustee. 

Festival of Trees is scheduled December 4 – 6 This event is held in conjunction with the DR Merchants Community Stroll and Light Parade.  We welcome DR Nonprofits to create a tree showcasing their organization and the wonderful things they do for the community each year.
