Remembering Those that Served

The practice of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers for Memorial Day dates back to the end of the Civil War. Memorial Day is a day to remember those who served and died for our freedom.

The Deep River Historical Society has created a new exhibit highlighting the faces and personal stories of those men and women who served during WWII. Eighty-five Deep River families sent more than one son or daughter to war from 1940 to 1946. Fourteen of them didn’t come home. Please stop by this summer and learn more about these brave men and women who sacrificed so much for the freedom we enjoy today in our exhibit “Remembering Our World War II Veterans.”

Pictured is Joe Smith, the first Deep River resident to die in action in February of 1943 in North Africa.

While we are closed for Memorial Day Weekend, we will be opening our doors up to the public on June 4th from 1:00-4:00 pm.
